Please reach us at petrichorhealing@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
True answer? Maybe. Therapy is not for everyone. But especially nowadays, many people feel anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, hopeless, helpless and/or mentally foggy. Families often scramble to maintain a quality of life while managing the ripple effect of one member’s mental illness or substance use. While some people can identify the source(s) of their concerns, others feel a vague, lingering discontent. It is not uncommon for a new client to walk into therapy saying "I don't even know why I'm here, and I don't know why I'm unhappy. My life is good." Okay--No problem! We can work with that; if you are willing to connect, this is actually a great starting point!
Of course! It's wonderful if you can talk to loved ones, but sometimes they are also struggling, or they cannot see past the interpersonal dynamics to give unbiased support. They might want to help but not have the time. In therapy, you are the priority and treatment goes at your pace with complete focus on what you want to accomplish/resolve. We have helped many clients identify their goals, get unstuck and move into the life they want and deserve.
The honest answer is that we hope so, but we won't know until we have a chance to talk! Your concerns require an individualized, targeted approach to building goals, and not every therapist is suited to help every client. Self-care is not selfishness and it is not a buzzword—it is critical.
We are devoted to helping you identify and implement ways to feel happier and stronger in your daily life. Some common areas of focus are grief/loss/trauma, multi-generational ripple effects of mental illness and trauma, intentional life reconstruction, blended and bi/multi-cultural families, and mental health challenges connected to performing/the Arts. We are heavily invested in the health and welfare of the LGBTQ+ population, clients who are transitioning, and parenting LGBTQ children. Additionally, clients often seek support for rebuilding in mid-life, social displacement, loss of status, and concerns specific to aging.
Fair question! We use an integrative approach of psychodynamic work and family systems with applied interventions and a humanistic underpinning. There is no "expert" in the room; we reflect what we think is happening, and we check in to make sure we are getting it right. Once we mutually start to discover what makes you tick, we collaborate on your path forward. We explore unconscious motivations, attachment, and the root causes of any trauma, then work on implementing preferred choices.
Understanding family history through a psychodynamic lens can help clients make sense of vague or confusing feelings, beliefs and messages from childhood. Trauma-informed parts work can help stabilize and heal long-standing shame, fear and distress. EMDR can be life-changing in helping to neutralize the emotions linked to adverse memories. We blend the wisdom of Stoicism with aspects of guided imagery, somatic interventions, ACT, CBT, DBT, Solution-focused and Narrative therapies, and Positive Psychology as some of the more modern approaches that offer tools for intentional change.
