When life-giving rain falls upon dry land, a combination of geosmin and ozone are naturally released, giving the familiar and centering scent of fresh rain. While ozone has no natural odor, geosmin is so powerful that it can be detected in minute parts, miles away. Most people find this aroma to be comforting, pleasing, and grounding. Some people, however, do not.
This naturally occurring event can be used as a metaphor for therapy. Life can be difficult; we can start to feel burnt out, hard and brittle, like dry land. With some refreshing input (rain) to help us restore balance, we begin to naturally release who we are. Perhaps some of what results will be kept private, not clearly detectible by others (ozone), while some changes may become strong identifiers of who we are and how far we can go (geosmin); together, they form a fresh assertion of self into the world (petrichor.)
As with anything real, many people around you will accept and enjoy these changes. Others may not, and that's okay. It has to be, for you to be authentic. Our goal is for you to become the healthiest, most resilient version of yourself, establishing balance so you can share with the world your esse, or true nature.
We draw from various modalities to work with adult individuals on recovery from trauma, mood dysregulation, stabilization of daily activities, the implementation of healthy coping skills, and adjustment to life changes. We are especially well-suited to clients in the Arts, addressing issues such as audition stress, visibility, self-concept and locus of control.
So congratulations on taking this major step towards seeking a higher quality of life, whether for yourself or a loved one--Welcome to Petrichor!
